Jim Beam

Solving volume constraints and material physics through precision packaging engineering

Jim Beam’s partnership with the Cadillac Formula 1 team offered an ideal opportunity: Introduce the brand to a younger, luxury-focused demographic ahead of the Miami Grand Prix. The plan was to send out a limited-edition influencer mailer to drive social media engagement.

Utilizing clever engineering and hands-on supply chain management, we turned tough industrial constraints and tight deadlines into a flawless, premium experience.

Jim Beam Packaging Challenge

Launching a partnership with the Cadillac F1 team, Jim Beam’s goal was to build a mailer that not only carries promotional items but also actively positions Jim Beam as the fan drink of choice.

To shift Jim Beam’s image toward a younger demographic with a taste for premium brands, the toolbox packaging had to feel elite rather than the type of toolbox found in a hardware store. However, raw metal offers zero shock absorption, creating a major risk for the custom glassware inside, which could easily shatter against the toolbox walls during transport.

The challenge began with a volume mismatch: Jim Beam only needed a few dozen units. Because custom metal tooling isn’t feasible for such a small batch, we had to source an off-the-shelf, double-layer toolbox. This constraint created structural problems. We needed to fit the interior layout with pre-selected swag items with precise dimensions to keep them from shifting, but the box had rolled safety edges along the rim. This left us with a top opening that was noticeably narrower than the inside cavity.

At the same time, we had to protect the fragile contents from transit damage. Raw metal dents, scratches, and chips easily, and its rigid frame offers no cushioning for glassware.

Engineering the custom ice tray added another layer of unpredictability. Because silicone shrinks during the baking process, we had to design around an unstable 1mm to 3mm tolerance variance. We also had to find the sweet spot in the silicone durometer scale; if the silicone was too hard, the ice cubes would be trapped, but if it was too soft, the entire tray would feel flimsy and cheap.

Additionally, we had to match colors across two entirely different materials produced in separate factories, all under a fast-approaching race day deadline that made standard lead times impossible.

Our Full-Service Packaging Approach

Design

To bridge the gap between rugged utility and luxury aesthetic, the design centers around an off-the-shelf, double-layer metal toolbox. Inside, we solved the structural bottleneck of the narrow, rolled safety edges by shaping the EVA foam inserts into a custom trapezoidal structure—wider at the top and narrower at the bottom—so they slide into the box smoothly without warping.

To protect the fragile glassware, we undersized the foam cutouts to create an interference fit. This tight wrap kept the glasses completely immobilized, allowing the kit to pass our internal drop tests without issue.

Manufacturing

Production was split between different facilities, requiring tight coordination to manage material tolerances. To handle the unpredictable 1mm to 3mm shrinkage variance of the baking silicone, we waited for the factory to pull the very first physical unit from the production line, measured it immediately, and only then began CNC-cutting the corresponding EVA foam cavities. We calibrated the silicone to an exact 50-degree durometer rating, hitting the perfect sweet spot between a sturdy feel and flexible ice release.

For color consistency, we rushed the first completed metal box from the Shandong factory via express courier to our team in Dongguan. This allowed them to mix the liquid silicone formulation against a real-world physical reference rather than relying on a digital Pantone swatch.

Logistics & Compliance

To meet the Miami Grand Prix deadline, we stationed our procurement team at the factory to catch production issues in real time, hold immediate troubleshooting meetings, and compress the traditional multi-week molding timeline.

For quality control, we surpassed standard hardware metrics and inspected the units under an artisan appearance standard. We hand-selected only the top 60 flawless units out of a mass production run of 260. Finally, to ensure everything arrived safely, every approved toolbox was individually bagged, boxed, and packed with custom EPE foam liners to protect the custom paint from scratches or dents during transit.

Business Outcome

The toolbox built immediate hype on social media ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, driving strong engagement around the Cadillac F1 partnership. Feedback from influencers and clients was incredibly positive, highlighting the high quality of the toolbox and the custom ice tray.

On Instagram, the comment sections were filled with followers saying they loved the ice tray and were excited to use it to mix their own Jim Beam cocktails. By leaning into this precise execution, the project did exactly what it needed to do: Put Jim Beam in front of a younger demographic and establish it as the go-to drink for motorsport fans.
